Job Posting – Junior Conservationist Summer Student Position

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is accepting applications for a Junior Conservationist. This is an 8-week summer student position (July and August) funded by Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation.

The position is designed for a senior secondary school or first year college/university student to gain experience in various roles and departments within ABCA to see if this is a career path for you. The Junior Conservationist will work with an energetic team of dedicated conservation professionals.

Qualifications
  • The candidate must live within one of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority watershed municipalities: Adelaide Metcalfe, Bluewater, Central Huron, Huron East, Lambton Shores, Lucan Biddulph, Middlesex Centre, North Middlesex, Perth South, South Huron, Warwick, West Perth.
  • Working towards a secondary school diploma or degree/diploma from accredited university/college.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in environmental resource management.
  • Attained secondary school courses in science and geography.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to use, computer with Microsoft Office, Explorer, Outlook.
  • Team player with good organization, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence.
  • Transportation to the ABCA Administration Centre, 71108 Morrison Line, 2 km east of Exeter.
Duties may include working with ABCA staff to complete the following:
  • Assisting the Conservation Educators with preparation and delivery of 5 different week-long Nature Day Camps for youth aged 6-9 and 10-12.
  • Assisting in water quality sampling and species at risk aquatic/turtle monitoring.
  • Maintenance and clean-up at conservation areas, commemorative woods, and nature trails.
  • Assisting in forestry and wetland evaluation field work on ABCA and private landowner properties.
  • Computer data entry and spreadsheets.
  • Other reasonable tasks assigned by ABCA staff in various departments.

Remuneration: $16.55 per hour (minimum wage)

Hours: 35 hours per week with possibility of some evenings and weekends
