Community working group recognizes generosity of early Platinum, Gold donors to pedestrian trail bridge project

Community has donated or pledged more than $180,000 to build Jones Bridge; fundraisers hope to raise $110,000 more to turn dream into reality

The Pedestrian Trail Bridge Community Working Group held a brief ceremony on June 5, 2018 to honour the early Platinum and Gold level donors who have kick-started the community project to build Jones Bridge on the South Huron Trail. “I am so impressed by the generosity of the people in this community,” said Dave Frayne, Chairman of the Pedestrian Bridge Community Working Group. “Their generous donations bring us closer and closer to making the community safer and more active with a new pedestrian trail bridge.”

The project goal for the pedestrian bridge is $290,000 and more than $180,000 has been donated or pledged towards this goal.

Right now, some trail users have to walk beside vehicle traffic on the roadway over Morrison Dam in order to enjoy both sections of the South Huron Trail. A new pedestrian bridge can change that by offering a safer, more scenic alternative. A new pedestrian bridge would be located west of Morrison Line and link the north and south sides of the South Huron Trail.

The community has donated or pledged more than $180,000 so far to build Jones Bridge. The community fundraising partners hope to raise another $110,000 to make the bridge dream a reality in 2018.

The creation of a pedestrian bridge would give people a safer, more scenic alternative to walking beside vehicle traffic on the road. The proposed bridge will be suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, strollers, wheelchairs, the South Huron Trail Mobile (for people with limited mobility), and winter visitors.

Donation levels include Platinum ($5,000 and over); Gold (between $2,000 and $4,999); Silver ($500 to $1,999); and Bronze (donations of all amounts up to $499). Donations to the project, made directly to Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation, are eligible for charitable gift receipts for income tax purposes.

The community has donated or pledged $180,000 to date and the fundraisers hope to raise $110,000 more to turn the bridge dream into a reality. The community group said the new bridge will make the community safer and more active by linking both sides of the South Huron Trail. This will mean people won’t have to walk beside vehicle traffic in order to enjoy both sections of the trail.
